general information

100 kilometres offshore on the border of the Coral Sea lie an uninhabited stretch of reef breaks that rival anything you will surf in Indonesia. Getting here is obviously the big hurdle and currently no one really has enough experience in surfing these waters to know when its big or really too big. Hixson Reef really is the tip of the iceberg that is offshore reef exploration in Australia.

The waves around the cay are all powerful peaks breaking against living coral. Bear that in mind when you take off on a 10 foot bomb having only watched the break for 5 minutes. The lefts tend to be the norm coming off the regular SE swell. Cyclonic swell throws wave energy in all sorts of crazy directions here and new breaks that work maybe 3 times a year are discovered during every storm. Make sure you bring everything you need on an expedition like this, help is a long way from hand.
