general information
Located in the Big Island's remote Puna District, Pohoiki Bay house three breaks. The easiest to surf and closest to the boat ramp is First Bay. It's a fun wave for all levels and the waters are warm from the volcanic springs nearby. For those wanting more of a challenge and slightly cooler waters keep paddling to second reef, out and to the right. It's faster and can get hollow at lower tides on the right swell, not suitable for beginners. For the hellman and local rippers the famous Third Bay is around a small rocky outcrop and is one of the better big wave spots on the Big Island, though requires a large swell to break.
The nearby Kilauea volcano continues to spew lava and change the coastline around Puna, with several surf breaks lost over the last decade, as the solidifying lava changes bathymetry.
