For experienced surfers looking for something challenging, head to Playa Hermosa, which is about 10 kiliometers south of Jaco. Playa Hermosa is a long stretch of beach, that contains several quality different beach breaks that produces some of the most glorious waves in Costa Rica. The beach being so long has a few different surfing areas.  

At the northern end, infront of the hotels as you come form Jaco, are a number of peaks that offer fast and hollow sandy barrels at the lower end of the tide. Further south you will come across a popular break known as Almendro or Tree (actually translates to Almond tree), which as the name suggest breaks in front of a big tree.  Even further south you will come across a break called Corners that offers a bit more size and power than those further north.  At the very southern end is an area called Tulin, that has a rivermouth break able to throw up clean, hollow waves in glassy conditions and handles a more west swell.  Watch out for crocodiles in the wet season.

All waves here can get very heavy when the swell gets up, so better know what you are doing surfwise, or at least be able to handle a brutal wipeout and long hold down.  That being said it will always have waves and they and they will nearly always deliver.  Overall Playa Hermosa is one of the jewels of Costa Rican surfing and a trip to the country is not complete without a surf here.
