general information
Hanalei Bay is home to several different breaks and as such is probably the most well known spot on the island. The break most recognisd here is Hanalei itself, which is a long right hander breaking off the Point at the northern entrance to the bay, over a lava reef. It offers up punchy walling rides with barrels thrown into the mix also and can run for hundreds of metres through to an inside bowl section in the middle of the bay. Further north around the point is a break called Hideaways, which is a right hand reef break over coral which can also produce good waves. Waves here can get pretty crowded, especially on the inside section. Intermediate to advanced surfers.
Further insdie the bay still, is an inconsistent break called Pinetress that depends on a large swell getting into the bay and good rivermouth bank. Accross the bay from the main Hanalei point, is a fickle left reef break called Waikoko that needs a large north swell and west wind to start to work. Outside the bay lie two big wave spots: Kings Reef and Queens Reef. Reserved for tow-in hellman on the largest of the winter north swells, these offer up a few times a season.
