general information
Point Addis is a good place to escape the crowds around the Torquay area when the swell is up. There are a few different places to surf at Point Addis, depending on conditions. The most commonly surfed spot is a section of the reef approximately 300 metres from the point itself. This right-hand reef break is a slow breaking wave ideal for intermediate surfers, and popular with long-boarders. If the other waves down here are working, you’ll see them.
There’s a good reason the surf down here is not as crowded as at Torquay and Bells - it simply isn’t as good. At five to six foot (double overhead) Point Addis is at its best, and even at this size there is plenty of time to make the drop. The wave does have some push behind it and peels at a nice speed, but still the wall is not overly vertical. For Point Addis to reach this ideal size, Bells Beach needs to be eight to ten foot.
Getting into the line-up is straight forward, paddle out across the reef from behind the wave. There’s no trick to coming in, just straight across the reef.
Point Addis is a 10 minute drive from Bells Beach, it’s the next headland to the west. From Great Ocean Road, turn off onto Point Addis Road. The track to the beach is actually 150 metres before the lookout. From here it’s a two minute walk down a bush track. You can check the surf from the top of the stairs - as you face the ocean, look to your left.
Point Addis is a beautiful location, but it’s not a place for high performance surfing and you certainly won’t get barrelled. It’s rather somewhere to find a little bit of solitude from the hungry packs surfing around Torquay.
Oh, one final thing - Point Addis is a nudist beach…
