general information
Boneyards is a top-to-bottom, board breaking, limb snapping barrel. It is located on the north-east side of Cape Naturaliste, inside Bunker Bay - 500 meters past The Farm. Boney’s can be an awesome wave when the banks are good, but unfortunately the banks aren’t always there. It is common local knowledge that Boneyards is the prime winter surf spot in the area.
Boneyards is offshore in a south-westerly wind, and turns the Southern Ocean’s giant winter swells into perfect four to six foot barrels. Over summer, it’s dead flat.
The surf at Boneyards is completely dependent on the sand banks and, when it’s working, rights seem to be more common than lefts. The waves are never full or fat, but they can closeout abruptly. When it’s big, water drains off the beach before folding over and exploding into the shallow sand bottom. You need to get to your feet quickly and know how to drive through barrels.
When the banks are good at Boneyards, the news spreads through Dunsborough like wild fire. As Boney’s is for experienced surfers only, thankfully the crowds don’t reach the crazy numbers at nearby spots like The Farm.
Boneyards is one of the few joys of winter in the south-west. It‘s a high risk wave - high risk of you getting the best barrel of your life!
