general information

At the southern end of Newport Beach is a big rocky out crop that is known as Newport Reef. The Reef tends to break only when the swell is big and is clean when the wind has some south in it.

A long paddle out through rocks and dealing with a rip is common. The wave tends to start about 300m from the beach so you want to be fit to take it on. Once out there, the waves can be a bit shifty and it is easy to cop one on the head. However, when you do find one it is a very 'Sunset Beach' fell with long walls and a few interesting sections. Can be one of the few waves on offer when the swell is big and on its day is fun.

Crosswaves
I surfed Crosswaves back in the late 60's, before legropes, very sharkey swim to get the plank back off the rocks... great memories though. I guess they'd do jet-ski tow-ins out there these days?
