general information

Torquay Point is a popular summer family beach, with decent waves that occasionally get classic. The Point is a right-hander, as are most of the waves in the area. It initially breaks over reef, before reaching the sand where it either washes out, or closes out when it’s bigger.

The waves at Torquay Point are relatively easy to surf, as it’s not a powerful wave. This makes the break popular with intermediate surfers and long-boarders. The wave offers up a nice slow moving wall, ideal for small turns. Surf schools also frequent the beach, such is the tame nature of the surf. Torquay Point isn’t a wave for high performance surfing, it’s rather a place to cruise about and relax in the water.

Over summer the beach is packed, and the Surf Life Savers definitely have their work cut out for them. To surf here over summer can cause more frustration than it’s worth, and it’s quite dangerous considering the number of swimmers, kids, and boogie-boarders in the water. The waves are best over winter, in any case.

Further around the headland and in front of the rocks is a break known as Haystacks, which can be seen from the beach. It only takes a couple of minutes to paddle here from Torquay Point. Haystacks can offer some relief from the pack surfing Torquay Point, as only more accomplished surfers will venture over here. There are a lot of rocks sticking out of the water very close to where the waves break, so be careful. The waves at Haystacks aren’t as good as that at Torquay Point.

The beach is close to the Torquay township and is easy to find. It is located on The Esplanade, and once you’re in the general area there are signs that will direct you to one of the two car parks.
