general information

Bancoora is a long peeling right-hand point break that can get exceptionally good, although it can be difficult to predict when this will happen. The surf will be pumping one minute and, in a split second, turn to mush for the rest of the day. If you have one good session here though, you’ll be checking it for years to come.

The guys who regularly surf here sit right out the back close to the rocks, although this isn’t necessarily the best section of the wave. Initially, the wave breaks over reef at the top of the point, then peels its way towards the beach over the sand bottom.

At its optimum size of, three to six foot (head high to double overhead), the waves have a lot of push. They peel down the line at a comfortable pace, and the wall stands up well ahead of the white water allowing for big turns.

Bancoora is quite protected, therefore it needs a solid swell to get going, and it is offshore in a westerly. If Bancoora is good, the reefs at Torquay will be pumping, meaning the wave rarely gets crowded.

Breamlea town site is located between Barwon Heads and Torquay. Bancoora is just east of the town on Breamlea Road, and there is a car park and a Surf Lifesaving Club that are easy to spot from the road.

Local knowledge is invaluable at a place like Bancoora due to its fickle nature and, for everyone else, hopefully luck is on your side.
