general information
The wave that has become known as the world class "Superbank" could almost come under the banner of a "man made" surf spot. Lets rewind back to the early 00's around 2001. The Gold Coast Council decided it would be a great idea to dredge and pump sand out of the Tweed River to make it more navigable for the fleet of fishing boats that reside there. This sand was deposited behind the rocks at Snapper, and wonderful things started to happen! This sand, spread by natural ocean currents, started migrating north and filling in the gaps between the world class points of Snapper Rocks right through to Kirra, creating one looooong sandy shelf. In the space of a few short months the waves started getting longer and longer until they joined up to one long ride over a 1000 metres long, the Superbank was born. The quality of this bank pinnacled around 2002 and word spread world wide making the Superbank super crowded, long waits and a little aggression became synonymous with this wave as pros and kooks alike jostle for waves. The quality of the wave is now in slow decline as the sand pumping is winding down, but make no mistake, it's still a quality wave for every surfers hitlist.
The wave itself has many varying sections to it from the heavy hollow takeoff at snapper to the more mellower walls of Greenmount. Walk along its length, find a section suited to your ability, paddle out and wait..... and wait...... until someone falls outside of you.
