general information
Suck Rock is an extremely short and small wave, located on the south side of the Barwon Heads Bluff. The local grommets, particularly the bodyboarders, are the only people who tend to surf this right-hand reef break.
Suck Rock is only 10m long (30 feet) at the most, breaking very close to the shore. Surfed on a high tide it is extremely shallow - on low tide the reef is literally dry. The wave is a quick round barrel, the grommets being the only surfers small enough to fit inside the tube. If the waves are any bigger than three foot (head high), it breaks too far out and misses the inside barrel section. Sometimes Suck Rock forms a peak, creating an average left-hander as well.
There is a car park located on Bluff Road, just outside of Barwon Heads. From the car park you need to walk halfway down the stairs to the beach to see the wave, where it’s located 200m to the east. When the tide is high, the waves will wash up into the cliff face, making it difficult to get to the break.
In conclusion, if you’re taller than Gary Coleman, don’t bother looking at Suck Rock - leave it to the grommets to take advantage of this perfect, but tiny, barrel.
