I am keen to hear thoughts of what makes a semi-fish, a hybrid and a fish ? I know what the traditional twin keel fish is all about but would like to know what people think is the difference between these designs ??? thay have become so blurred of late I think...It doesnt hurt the design side of things at all, actually great to see several designs morphed into 1 functional board...thoughts ??? wicked

What is everybody riding in small average beachies ? The trditional fish seems to have lost its popularity a bit with some and now people are moving towards semi-fish-hybrid shapes that allow more performance but still plane well and have plenty of float...thoughts ???

Good Question , I think alot of people are dicovering (or re-discovering )the virtues of tail area and volume

IMHO the great surfers can do just about anything on any board the rest of us mortals try for awhile to emulate on the same boards. Most average surfers need the volume to get the take off to begin to generate towards the speed the pros can crank on.Water time is big in getting tuned ( how good are at the end of a surf trip compared to the start)A personal shaper who understands how Mr Average surfs and who can guide him in board selection ( dog avoidance) and shape as he or she progresses is magic.Going into a shaping bay and watching your new board come out from the blank it's not the resin fumes that excite its seeing you new board and mentally romancing the wave! tongue{Pridmore and Tigers go you guys)

Happy old fart!

I think you gotta discern between what is a fish , and what is a fish-tail. You can put a fish-tail on any board, even a longboard , but it doesn't make it a fish. I don't think you can stray too far (dimentionally speaking) from the original Skip Frye style fish , before it becomes something totally unrelated to the original design concept.

Interesting point Tigers, seemed every board under 6 feet got the fish label slapped on it. Then this whole XL fish idea jumps up and then everything over 6'5" to 8 foot is a fat cunts fish. Anything over 8 to 9 is a mini mal and then 9 foot plus is a longboard. Say it aint so.

Only when you eat the peanuts outta my sheit

PJ, pidgeon holing surfboards,IMO, is a sales and marketing thing . I only care about their performance,no matter how big or small they are.big_smile............my current interest is old twin-fins

marketing thing ??? I shape everything and anything and it gets bloody confuding if they dont have names , how does a punter tell me what he likes or what design he is talking about without a design name or pidgeon hole as you call it mate ??? There prob is some marketing stuff goin on but for me I just give em a name so I and customers know what they are and to differeciate one design from another...especially with all the hybrids of hybrids with slight adjustments and then modifications of the hybridisation, who knows what these designs are anymore, but I do know it is all time coz finally surfers are up for some diff stuff besides just a high-perf thruster......example of designs I have atm...

Fat-Bat ( semi fish quad )Quadfather ( wider , slightly flatter perf quad )MP3 ( semi-fish- 2 + 1 set-up, retro with modern twist )Swinger ( stinger tye design, semi-fish nose, high perf tail, quad, usually round tail )Hyper ( typical ultra high performance shapes , usually thruster )Double D ( fuller planshape, wider, flatter deck, loose and lively, shorter )Vicous Kanid ( semi -fish, lots of curve, deep double concaved quad (or thruster or twin ) ), for pocket surfingsingles, twinnies, mini mals, longboards and everything in between....without names I would be farrkkked.....

Hows the swinger been going Mark? I find that shape really interesting

..Do not try...do..

Swingers go great, it was my fave shape for along time but I am so hooked on the finless slide and glide lately, the Swingers are still goin well.....done a few in longer lengths with great feedback from customers.....
