Southern Sumatra, also known as Sumatera Selatan is a province of Indonesia.

It is on the island of Sumatra, and borders the provinces of Lampung to the south, Bengkulu to the west, and Jambi to the north.
Just off the east coast are the islands of Bangka and Belitung, which were split from Sumatera Selatan province to form the new province of Bangka-Belitung in 2000.

The capital of Sumatera Selatan province is Palembang. Palembang has its own local television station.

The southern Sumatra coastline was not as badly affected in the 2004 Tsunami and is still a very active, yet unspoilt part of Indonesia to go on a surf trip. As with alot of surf spots around Indo, the south Sumatra area is pretty remote and lacks home comforts, though there are now a few land based surf camps springing up in this area. Ujung Bocur is one of the longest and most consistent waves in this area and there is a good place to stay right in front of it.

When planning a surf trip to south Sumatra accommodation usually isn't too hard to come by. There are now many companies offering surf camp style digs right in front of many of the top Sumatran breaks. The surf camps usually consist of staying in a 'losmen'. These are traditional Indonesian houses, typically constructed from wood and set in well manicured gardens of flowers and fruit trees with an open air yet private bathroom, which is a very pleasant experience.

Many of the surf camp companies will also lay on charter boats that you can use for day trips to other breaks and have a bar and restaurant to share surf tales with one another in the evening. Prices are reasonable and cheaper than the live aboard boat option but do shop around.
