Phuket is situated off the west coast of Southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea. It is Thailand's largest Island, being is 50 km long north to south and 21 km wide. It is joined to the mainland by Sarasin bridge to Phang Nga Province, it is also bordered (though not by land) by Krabi to the south. Today it is a tourist and backpacker mecca with a host of beautiful sandy beaches and accommodations from hostels to unthinkable luxury. The west coast sees surf during it's monsoon season, and hosts annual contests. The name Phuket (of which the h is silent and pronounced pu) is apparently derived from the word bukit, in Malay which means hill, as this is what the island appears like from a distance, with a large central mountain ranges running through the island.
