Toliara Region, Madagascar: Morwen; 2004
Toliara consists basically of the entire southern portion of the island including the main surfing hubs of Fort Dauphin on the east coast and the town of Toliara on the west coast. This province holds the main surf potential for Madagascar. North and East coasts are are a little mysterious and rarely work. Swell there originates from the Arabian Gulf well to the north so decay is a problem.
There are a wealth of options here awaiting discovery. Fort Dauphin is a sound place to commence your search and there are several excellent spots worth investigating here such as super consistent Ambinanibe and the right hand point at Monseigneur.
The further west you go the sharkier it gets, freshwater run off with mangroves in tropical water are a recipe for murky turgid waters in places - perfect for Bull sharks. Like most shark species, Bull Shark attacks on humans are typically a case of mistaken identity within the murky waters but attacks happen frequently and are occasionally fatal. Avoid early morning / late afternoon sessions and water of poor visibility in general.
