Gran Canaria, is translated as "Grand Canary" in english. It is an island of the Canary Islands, just west of Fuerteeventura.
The island is of volcanic origin, mostly made of fissure vents. The Grand Canary has an area of 1,560 squared kilometres and its maximum altitude is 1,949 metres.

Surfing in on the island of Gran Canara is all about shallow waves over volcanic lava reefs. The waves here lurch out of deep offshore waters and explode onto these perfectly formed platforms in a similar way to that of Hawaii in the Pacific, hence earning Gran Canara, along with its neighbouring Canary islands, the Hawaii of the Atlantic. There are a few mellower waves around the island suited more to the novice, but all waves here break over reef.
Gran is also a very popular tourist destination and therefore the number of hotels to choose from all over the island, the great waves and perfect weather has seen an explosion of surfers in the water. In the past this had lead to tensions in the line up amongst the Island locals and reports of a series of “localism’ incidents at some of the more well known breaks. In general this shouldn’t be a problem to you if you bring plenty of respect with you and leave the ego at home.
