Amchitka is a volcanic, unstable island in the Rat Islands group of the Aleutian Islands in southwest Alaska. The island is roughly 68 kilometres in length and varies between 3 to 6 kilometres in width. The island is currently not available for permanent resing since 1832 and was once used for nuclear testing. At present, it is no longer used for nuclear testing but monitored for the leaksage of radioactive materials.

Amchitka has a maritime climate, often foggy and windswept, with cloud cover 98 percent of the time. While temperatures are moderated by the ocean, storms are frequent.
