introduction
ScottDavis: View from Russet Ridge Winery near Naracoorte, 16 June 2005
The name Limestone Coast was adopted for the region in the southeast of South Australia not too long ago. Most of the Limestone Coast region is low-lying, and was inundated by sea less than 2 million years ago.
It includes the towns of Bordertown, Keith, Millicent, Mount Gambier, Penola, and Naracoorte, the coastal resorts of Beachport, Kingston SE and Robe, and the wine-growing regions of Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Mount Benson.
The major industries of the region include farming, viticulture, forestry and tourism.
surfing
Great White Shark South Australia; Niranjan; 16.08.2007
From Port Lincoln running west to the Western Australia border is the Limestone Coast. In this area the Great White Shark is never far from the local surfers thoughts, and should be a very real consideration for any passing surfer.
The breaks here are as heavy as the locals and are rugged and remote, this is really an area for the experienced surfer with a kamikaze attitude to surfing, not for the faint hearted.
The waters around here demand respect but the rewards can be awesome.
where to stay
Blue Lake Mt Gambier; Admella; 29.02.2008
The limestone coast is famous for it's exquisite seafood dining and fine red wines and accommodation is plentiful here with a broad spectrum of choices in all regions ranging from good quality camp grounds to hostels, hotels and motels. Book in advance during holiday seasons and public holidays to avoid disappointment - it's well worth contacting the local tourist information offices who will point you in the right direction and offer good advice on the best places to stay - they will even book you in if you ask them nicely!!
