introduction
Beneaththelandslide: Ardrossan, South Australia, 14 January 2007
Yorke Peninsula is located in South Australia, and often confused with Cape York Peninsula in Queensland.
The Yorke Peninsula is a peninsula north-west and west of Adelaide, between Spencer Gulf on the west of the peninsula and Gulf St. Vincent on the east.
Main towns include the Copper Triangle towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo; farming centres of Maitland, Minlaton and Yorketown; and the port of Ardrossan.
A number of the smaller coastal towns are popular destinations for fishing and holidays, particularly from Adelaide.
surfing
Foraminifera: Innes National Park; Jan 2007
Yorke Peninsula has a lot to offer the intrepid and well prepared surfer where the luxury of a four wheel drive would be a wise investment, as would adequate supplies of the basics for survival. Always fill up at every service station you come across. Dont wait to try and save a few cents at the next once because..there may not be a 'next one' for a few hundred kilometres.
It's 40 kilometres of coastline line has an array of beachies, reefs, snakes, sharks and all manor of creepy crawlies.
You can usually find a quality wave here whatever the conditions and the bigger the swell is the more choice you will have.
where to stay
VW Camper; Paul Palmer; April 2006
The Yorke Peninsula is well catered for in the mid price range in the form of small hotels and motels but is a little thin on the ground with choices for the shoe string backpacker with only a few hostels. Camping or campervanning might be good option here to get you close to the surfbreaks at a reasonable price. Several people splitting the cost of van rental and fuel can work out reasonable cheap and be loads of fun, but how long for who knows with the current rate of inflation on petrol!!
