introduction
Wrh2: Regional map of California; 11 November 2005
The North Coast is a region of the state of California in the United States. The North Coast includes Marin County, Sonoma County, Mendocino County, Humboldt County and Del Norte County.
The region includes Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and Redwood National Park. Together these parks have more than 45 percent of all the old-growth redwood forest in California and that's why the North Coast is also known as a Redwood Empire or Redwood Coast.
surfing
White Shark; Terry Goss; 2006
The north coast of California is a fickle place to surf indeed. It really is for the more hardy surfers out there, the huge swells, freezing water and the thought of being munched by a Great White Shark really seperates the men from the boys here. The swells through the winter time are regularly in the 20-40ft range and generally unrideable as the correct tides, winds and swells seldom converge into clean surf. However, this madness is sometimes punctuated by the perfect glass off as every dog has his day, you're then just left with the men in grey suits to contend with.
where to stay
Luxury RV; Motormadness; 25.09.2007
California has many options and a diverse range of accommodation to suit all pockets and lifestyle. Whether you're looking for the most upmarket resorts and 5 star hotels or the simple life of the great outdoors then California has somewhere to rest your head.
Camping
California has an abundance of state parks and beaches fully catered up for campers. Many of these run on a first come, first served, basis and some require booking in advance. There are many KOA (Kampgrounds Of America) run sites all through the state.
Bed & Breakfast
Bed and breakfast inns are also a good option that can work out relatively cheap with quite a distinctive atmosphere. These are usually set up in peoples own homes where they rent you a room and they provide breakfast in with the price. This kind of option is usually found in the country and smaller towns,
Recreational Vehicle (RV)
Most campgrounds throughout the state of California accept RV's and have electrical hook up facilities. You can also rent recreational vehicles from many hire companies and they are a great way to stay mobile and park up where the best waves are!
Resorts
There are many top end resorts throughout the state of California ideal for a more family orientated surf holiday.
