Oh the good old days. How many lineups from Noosa to Malibu were peppered with discuntled surfers in the 1970's sniggering - pffft, it wasn't like this in the 40's. It is estimated that in the 1940's there were no more than 1000 surfboards in existence. Of course the downside to surfing in the 1940's was that pesky World War II thingy. So most of the pacific was spattered in hellfire and Indo was one big Japanese death camp. There werent any surf mags but many of the artists that were to start in the proto surf design industry working on board and clothing design cut their teeth on World War II propaganda posters. Lets relive some of their finest achievements below
